Latin America, the United States, religion and politics are ingredients in a brew of some explosive power. All four terms denote factors in a complex and, for the most part, violently intertwined relationship. Historically, this relationship has been shaped first and foremost by the Protestant mission in Latin America and its Pan-American goals. But the mission was yesterday. The once American religiosity of missionaries has taken on different and more charismatic forms under the conflicting conditions of life in Latin America and today is shaped above all by the class antagonisms of the subcontinent. But this does not mean that some evangelical organisations do not continue to represent the political interests of the Northern neighbour, or that, vice versa, the political religiosity of the South does not contribute to ideological struggles in the United States, whether through Liberation Theology in the 1980s or, today, through solidarity with Latin American migrants.<\/p>\n
This book aims to help make the logic of these inter-American entanglements visible and thus unravel them a little. The plot generates its narrative tension by being framed between the great Pan-Americanist conference of the American missions in Panama in 1916 and a conference of Latin American Pentecostals in 2016. In order to critically examine the earlier project, the author traces the history of this religious-political intertwining of the Americas. In doing so, the author takes up exemplary events, conflicts and developments: from the rise of liberation Protestantism in Brazil, the instrumentalisation of religion in the Central American wars and the ideological conflict in the USA, to everyday religious life in the Borderlands as well as migration to the USA under Trump. In his commentary, the author does not shy away from an appropriate portion of polemic.
