Traces of the history of the Upmann family business can be found not only in Bielefeld, but also in other places around the world. Through the history of the merchant family, the interconnectedness of the world in the 19th century becomes clear. It is a global story that only becomes comprehensible when we look at it from different points in the world. The Bielefeld merchant family came to great wealth and renown through a tobacco factory in Cuba. Using this case study as an example, the teaching folder focuses on economic interdependencies and emphasises the global dimension of the actions of local players. The history of the Upmanns is placed in a wider historical context and an overview of the conditions for their economic success in the tobacco business is given. Their success story cannot be understood without the transatlantic slave trade. How can a differentiated historical-political judgement on the ambivalent European modernity be developed on the basis of these very different stories? Do the Upmanns deserve our respect today, have they earned honour, is what they did meritorious or not?<\/p>\n
