¿Puede el feminismo vencer al populismo? Avances populistas de derecha y contestaciones interseccionales en las Américas

Despite the scandals caused by their openly sexist and racist remarks, far-right candidates Donald Trump and Jair Bolsonaro were elected president of the United States and Brazil, respectively. Furthermore, widespread intersectional feminist protests challenged the electoral success of both presidents. This essay has two aims: First, it reevaluates the phenomenon of right-wing populism by examining the logic and function of gender in order to expand theories and include more complex forms of description and analysis. Second, it outlines spaces and practices of resistance relating to gender politics or taking resistance to anti-sexism as a starting point. Assuming that gender is not a secondary aspect of current right-wing populist rhetoric, the essay argues that gender is a fundamental stage in the current struggle for cultural hegemony. Many societies are currently facing these struggles amid precariousness and neoliberal crises. An intersectional approach to gender in populism would enrich the field of research and provide an innovative parameter for reassessing the phenomenon and theorizing (right-wing) populism.
